This study aims to analyze and compare participatory communication in two CBT destinations with distinct characteristics: Kampung Batik Laweyan in Surakarta, a cultural heritage-based tourism village, and Ketenger Tourism Village in Banyumas, a nature-based tourism village. The study employs a qualitative approach using a comparative case study design. Data were collected through focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, non-participatory observation, and document analysis involving 18 informants selected through purposive sampling and were subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. The results indicate that both destinations implement participatory communication as the foundation for community-based tourism management, though through different approaches. Laweyan has developed an institutionalized communication model through a multi-stakeholder coordination and collaboration forum, whereas Ketenger implements a community-based communication model that relies on social capital, mutual cooperation, and deliberation. These findings indicate that participatory communication in CBT is contextual in nature; therefore, communication strategies must be tailored to the social, cultural, and institutional conditions of each destination. This study contributes to enriching the study of participatory communication in Community-Based Tourism through a comparative perspective.
